En años recientes la música folk ha recibido un interesante tratamiento por parte de las generaciones recientes. Partiendo de la base tradicional que involucra instrumentación principalmente acústica y
estructuras clásicas de canciones, muchos han optado por expandir ese lenguaje, retorcerlo o simplemente
actualizarlo. La canción folk fue adoptada por el mundo pop y en muchos casos absorvida en los años 60,
especialmente en Estados Unidos y Gran Bretaña, pero con el tiempo músicos de otros paises incursionaron
a su manera. Escucharemos una muestra de nuevas propuestas folk provenientes de Italia, España, Venezuela, Islandia, Canada y por supuesto Inglaterra y Estados Unidos.

Programa dedicado a uno de los más interesantes y particulares grupos de los años 70 y de la historia del rock, que cumple 40 años de formado y 30 de disuelto: GENTLE GIANT.

Formado de las cenizas de Simon Dupree & The Big Sound por los hermanos Phil, Ray y Derek Shulman, con la adición del teclista Kerry Minnear y el guitarrista Gary Green, Gentle Giant desde el comienzo planteó una singular combinación de rock con música medieval y folk británico, con pinceladas de minimalismo, jazz y psicodelia, que dió lugar a una de las más consistentes propuestas de la era del rock progresivo y sinfónico. Gentle Giant (1970), Aquiring The Taste (1971), Three Friends (72), Octopus (73), In A Glass House (73), The Power and The Glory (74) y Free Hand (75) conforman un cuerpo de trabajo de increibles proporciones.

Hacia la segunda mitad de su carrera, a partir del octavo disco, Interview (1976) algunos síntomas que anunciaban la llegada de nuevos aires comenzaron a notarse. En paralelo a la irrupción del punk, GG simplificó su propuesta, abandonando las complejas y preciocistas estructuras musicales en pro de temas más directos. Eso se notó en sus discos The Missing Piece (1977), Giant for a Day (1978) y en especial en Civilian (1980), canto de cisne de una banda única. La decición de separarse lucía lógica, aunque probablemente si no hubieran contado con aquellos fabulosos primeros discos, estos últimos hubieran sido apreciados de otra manera.

Estucharemos una selección de temas de todos sus discos, así como grabaciones en vivo (de radio y en concierto), una faceta fundamental para entender la dimensión de su música y en la que es posible apreciarlos intercambiandose instrumentos y tocando de todo (violin, cello, trompeta, flauta, vibrafono, saxo, sintetizadores, guitarras acústicas y eléctricas, mellotron, organo, batería, bajo.... )

Programa dedicado al dub, una corriente que exploramos periodicamente. Surgida en Jamaica a comienzos de los años 70 como producto de algunos experimentos en los que se modificaban las canciones, agregando ecos, reverberancias y otros efectos, y suprimiendo a veces la voz principal o ciertos instrumentos, desde entonces ha influencias a varias generaciones de músicos, desde el punk a la electrónica. Los llamados poetas dub son los pioneros de los Sound Systems y los remixes.

Haremos un recorrido desde los pioneros (Lee Perry, The Scientist), hasta proyectos actuales del dub
electrónico como Deadbeat, pasando por nombres esenciales como Mad Professor, Linton Kwesi Johnson
y otros proyectos que han coqueteado con el dub desde diversas aristas. Escucharemos material de Canada,
Alemania, Hungria, Inglaterra, Estados Unidos, Venezuela y por supuesto Jamaica.

El 2010 y por consiguente la nueva década, ha comenzado con una producción musical muy interesante y variada. Hace unas semanas hicimos una primera revisión del 2010, en cuanto a música pop se refiere. Esta semana vamos a seguir con ese recorrido en el que escucharemos mucho indie-pop, art-rock y algunas propuestas afines de Suecia, Dinamarca, Inglaterra, Escocia, Estados Unidos, Canada y Australia, incluyendo unos cuantos estrenos muy esperados como el de LCD Soundsystem, MGMT o Broken Social Scene.

Acto de Fe 18 de abril, 2010 The Beatls y la ruptura

Hace 40 años (exactamente el 10 de abril de 1970) Paul McCartney oficializaba su separación de los Beatles y por consiguiente
la ruptura de la más influyente banda de la historia de la música pop. Para entonces ya los 4 beatles habían dejado trabajar como una entidad. La ultima vez que se encontraron los 4 en un estudio fue para mezclar Abbey Road, en julio/agosto de 1969.

Cuando Macca hizo el anuncio, ya tenía listo su primer disco solista, que fue editado apenas una semana después, el 17 de abril, tal dia como hoy hace 40 años.  No valió de nada que lo persuadieran para que no interfiriera con la edición de Let it Be, que fue lanzado en mayo. Macca no habia quedado contento con los arreglos realizados por Phil Spector que modificaron las piezas que habian sido grabadas en su mayoria en enero de 1969, antes que las de Abbey Road. Sin embargo, Lennon y Harrison no solo aprobaron el trabajo de Spector sino que lo contrataron como productor de sus respectivos discos de ese año. Por su parte, Ringo Starr tampoco perdió tiempo y una semana despues del disco de Paul editó su debut como solista, Sentimental Journey, compuesto por versiones de piezas de la era pre-rock and roll. Tan activo estuvo Ringo que en septiembre lanzó un segundo disco, Beacoups of Blues, con canciones country y fue el baterista de los trabajos de Lennon y Harrison.

En noviembre de 1970 fue lanzado All Things Must Pass, el triple LP de George Harrison -a mi  juicio el mejor disco de un beatle solista- y en diciembre John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band.

En este Acto de Fe recorremos el disco Let it Be, para lo cual escucharemos en el mismo orden del disco original (en 2003 fue editado Let it Be.. Naked, sin los arreglos de Spector) versiones alternas, ensayos, grabaciones tomadas del concierto en la azotea del edificion de EMI Records y temas editados durante ese período. Mientras, en la segunda hora abordaremos las primeras obras solitas post-ruptura, las de 1970, tambien con  muchas tomas alternas.

En las postrimerías de la década de los 70 -el 30 de noviembre en Inglaterra y 8 de diciembre en Estados Unidos-, fue editado el doble LP The Wall, la última obra relevante que editó Pink Floyd. Para el momento ya el grupo había dejado de ser un cuarteto con cierto equilibrio entre sus integrantes y con oportunidad para que todos desarrollaran sus ideas. Roger Waters se habia hecho del mando.

Waters habia tenido la idea durante la gira del álbum anterior, Animals (1977), de realizar una obra sobre la alienación, la distancia que separa a una banda masiva que toca en grandes escenarios de su público. La muralla, pensaba Waters, era más real de lo que parecía. Obsesionado y afectado desde la niñez por el tema de la segunda guerra mundial en la que murió su padre, Waters creó el personaje Pink (personificado por Bob Geldof en la película de Alan Parker), un rock star que sufrió la muerte de su padre en la segunda guerra mundial, el maltrato de su madre, el castigo de su maestro, el abandono de su amante y finalmente cae al infernal mundo de la fama y las drogas, terminando en un juicio penoso enfrente de sus amigos y fans. A lo largo de la obra se describe la soledad, frustraciones y abandono.

“Confortably Numb” es considerada por sus fans la pieza maestra del álbum, la cual describe en grado último la desesperación del hombre actual. Esta pieza responde a la genial y última gran asociación Waters-Gilmour- con un resultado en el que David corona un solo de guitarra exquisito.

Para recordar el 30 aniversario hemos escogido recorrer el famoso disco desde la perspectiva de otras bandas. Escucharemos versiones de todo tipo, en el mismo orden que aparecen en el disco. Entre ellas, colocaremos dos pertenecientes a aquel increible tributo realizado en Caracas en mayo de 2004, especificamente el ultimo dia en el que La Orquesta Filarmónica Nacional dirigida por Alfredo Rugeles y un Ensamble de Rock al mando de Angel Quiñones sorprendieron a todo el Aula Magna de la UCV con un soberbio performance.

Programa dedicado al Psych-Rock actual, un ala del rock fuertemente influenciado por la psicodelia,
pero tambien con referencias al hard rock, el space rock, el garage rock y algunas otras corrientes. En los últimos años se ha producido un revival interesante de algunas corrientes de los años 70, encarnada en bandas como Wolfmother, Witchcraft, Big Elf, Dead Meadow y los proyectos de Jack White (White Stripes, Raconteurs, Dead Weather), entre otras, algunas con mayor énfasis en el hard rock, otras en el blues rock, pero todas teñidas de sonoridades psicodélicas. Escucharemos un interesante abanico de bandas provenientes de Inglaterra, Alemania, Suecia y principalmente Estados Unidos (California, NY, Texas....).

Ciclo de dos especiales dedicados a la trayectoria del inglés Damon Albarn, uno de los más imaginativos, prolíficos y esenciales músicos del universo pop de los últimos 20 años. Si bien su carrera durante los años 90 estuvo íntima e indisolublemente unida a la agrupación Blur, a partir del año 2000 su talento y espíritu inquieto lo llevaron a formar Gorillaz, una de las experiencias más exitosasas y particulares de la década pasada. Gorillaz acaba de editar su estupendo tercer disco. Además, Albarn llevó adelante el proyecto Mali Music en 2002, un acercamiento a la musica de Mali que resultó en un fabuloso álbum. En el 2007 formaría The Bad The Good & The Queen con Paul Simonon (The Clash), Tony Allen (Fela Kuti) y Simon Tong (The Verve) y mas tarde el proyecto Monkey. Además de ello, Albarn ha colaborado con Marianne Faithfull, Ray Davis (The Kinks), Massive Attack, Michael Nyman y otros.

La gran cantidad de material nos llevó a dividir en dos partes este especial, de modo que en el primero de los programas nos enfocaremos en Blur. Como siempre, nos ocuparemos de colocar muchos lados B, versiones alternas de sus temas conocidos, grabaciones en vivo, remixes, colaboraciones y rarezas. Para la segunda parte quedarán los otros proyectos y colaboraciones.

En diciembre de 1979 se editó uno de los discos más importantes de la historia del rock: London Calling, del cuarteto inglés The Clash. Tomando el nombre de los mensajes emitidos por la BBC durante la segunda guerra mundial (This is London Calling... This is London calling...), aquel disco se convirtió rapidamente en un clásico del post-punk dada su desprejuiciada mezcla de rockabilly, reggae, dub, funk, rock y punk, extendiendo su radio de influencia por décadas. The Clash, que en sus comienzos fue casi desauciada por la prensa debido a su limitada habilidad en la ejecución, amplió su paleta sonora de forma sorprendente y se dejó seducir por la música de Jamaica y otras corrientes.

30 años después, London Calling sigue conservando su lozanía y vigencia, tanto en el plano musical como en las temáticas de las letras (política, drogas, racismo, historia contemporánea, denuncia social...).

El Acto de Fe de esta semana lo dedicamos a revisar este importante disco y el período de gestación, grabación y presentaciones en vivo. Escucharemos demos, temas inéditos, tomas en vivo y por supuesto grabaciones oficiales que aparecieron en el doble LP (que en su momento fue vendido a precio de un solo disco)

El año y la nueva década ha empezado muy activa con discos de bandas conocidas como Massive Attack (ya le dedicamos un especial en el programa anterior), Vampire Weekend, Tindersticks, Yeasayer, Owen Pallet, Efterklang, Hot Chip, Quasi,  Beach House, Ok Go y otras que hacen su prometedor debut, aparte de sorprendentes uniones como la del bajista de Coldplay y el guitarrista de la recordada banda noruega A-ha. Ese proyecto se llama Aparatjik.

Escucharemos material editado en estas primeras semanas del 2010 proveniente de Estados Unidos, Inglaterra, Dinamarca, Canada, Suecia, Nueva Zelanda e Islandia.
