Crónicas Calidoscópicas THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN Hace 40 años nació Pink Floyd por Juan Carlos Ballesta para El Nacional Agosto 2007
Esta semana se cumplen 40 años de la edición de The Piper At The Gates of Dawn, primer disco de Pink Floyd y uno de los pináculos de la psicodelia pop. Amado por muchos, ignorado por otros, aquel revolucionario álbum fue producto del genio malogrado de Syd Barrett, guitarrista, cantante y principal compositor. A comienzos de 1968, con una salud afectada por las drogas, Syd fue sustituido por David Gilmour.
Cuando se editó The Piper At The Gates of Dawn el 5 de agosto de 1967 en Inglaterra y una semana después en Norteamérica, ya Pink Floyd era la sensación del underground británico, con apariciones en el programa Top of The Pops de la BBC y conciertos en Inglaterra y Escocia. Dos singles previos (“Arnold Layne” y “See Emily Play”) y una serie de telúricas presentaciones en famosos locales de la época como el UFO y el Marquee de Londres, habían colocado el nombre de la banda y en especial a su carismático líder, Syd Barrett (guitarrista, cantante y principal compositor), en el epicentro de la efervescente escena pop del año del verano del amor. La fiesta psicodélica “24 Hour Technicolor Dream” congregó a más de 30 grupos y personajes claves del momento, entre ellos The Who, The Move, Tomorrow, The Soft Machine y The Pretty Things, pero fue Pink Floyd el que deslumbró a los asistentes gracias a un alucinado performance acompañado de un colorido juego de luces. Cuarenta años después y a uno de la muerte de Barrett, la disquera EMI celebra el nacimiento de una de las bandas más populares e innovadoras de nuestro tiempo, con una edición especial de The Piper At The Gates of Dawn que incluye un CD con la magnífica grabación original monoaural (la misma del 30 aniversario), otro con la versión más conocida en estéreo y un tercer disco con los 3 singles de la etapa Barrett y una toma alterna de “Interstellar Overdrive”, un período que probablemente muchos de los que aman la música de Pink Floyd por discos como The Dark Side of The Moon (73) o The Wall (79) no conozcan en su justa dimensión.

Aún hoy, a una distancia de cuatro décadas, las once canciones que componen The Piper at The Gates of Dawn siguen destilando una vitalidad a prueba del tiempo. Aunque es indudable que refleja de forma directa una época de experimentación con drogas alucinógenas y total libertad creativa, su trascendencia va más allá de la simple documentación de un momento histórico cargado de visiones cósmicas inspiradas en libros infantiles y cuentos de hadas. The Piper representa la esencia en estado puro de un grupo que le dio personalidad al rock psicodélico y que luego de la obligada salida de Barrett supo consolidar con A Saucerful of Secrets (68), Ummagumma (69), Atom Heart Mother (70) y Meddle (71), una fértil etapa que desembocó en los exitosos The Dark Side of The Moon (73) y Wish You Were Here (75) en los que el cuarteto había mutado a un elaborado rock progresivo de corte espacial. The Piper fue producido por Norman Smith (el ingeniero de los primeros discos de The Beatles), quien fue impuesto por la disquera EMI en detrimento de Joe Boyd. Grabado por Pete Brown en el espacio de tres meses- nada habitual para los estándares de la época en la que una o dos semanas eran la norma-. A pesar de la carga de ingenuidad e inexperiencia, el disco refleja el talento desbordante de Barrett – un diamante en bruto que brilló solo un año- y sus tres compañeros: Roger Waters (bajo), Richard Wright (teclados) y Nick Mason (batería). El título del disco proviene de un capítulo del libro The Wind in The Willow de Kenneth Grahame, una de las obras favoritas de Syd. Los textos de las canciones poseen orígenes diversos, aunque por su construcción puede deducirse la influencia del LSD y la fascinación por la literatura inglesa, en especial la infantil. El primer tema, “Astronomy Domine”, es uno de los momentos que la banda, en sus diferentes épocas, siempre ha reivindicado. Un himno en sus primeros conciertos, este tema no fue incluido en la edición norteamericana y su lugar lo ocupó “See Emily Play”. La misteriosa psicodelia de “Lucifer Sam”, mezcla las ideas de Syd y su novia Jenny Spires. “Matilda Mother” es una de las joyas, la cual incluía inicialmente versos infantiles de Hillary Belloc que luego, al prohibirse su uso, fueron sustituidos por los de Syd. El pasaje instrumental con el órgano de protagonista-cortado para el disco por Smith-, solía extenderse por 10 minutos en vivo. “Flaming” es otra invocación de Barrett a la infancia, con Wright llevando el peso con el órgano y un clavecín fantasmal. El tema instrumental “Pow R Toc H, con el ritmo tribal de Mason y el piano jazzeado de Wright, fue una secuela de “Interstellar Overdrive”, el largo y abstracto tema que definió la primera etapa del grupo y que en los shows podía durar hasta media hora. La única composición individual no perteneciente a Syd Barrett fue “Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk”, de Roger Waters, quien a la postre se convertiría en el principal compositor. En ella se desatan todos los demonios, con un endiablado órgano, la furiosa guitarra de Syd y una línea de bajo envolvente que Mason acompaña a la batería con inusual velocidad. “The Gnome”, inspirada en Lord of the Rings de JRR Tolkien, es un exquisito folk psicodélico con algunos arreglos pop que podrían asociarse al hecho que The Beatles grababan en simultáneo Sgt. Pepper en los mismos estudios Abbey Road. Por su parte, “Chapter 24”, con letra inspirada en el capítulo 24 del I Ching, es uno de los momentos de mayor hipnotismo. “The Scarecrow” había aparecido como lado B del single “See Emily Play”, pero su inclusión en el LP fue un acierto. Se dice que proviene del libro infantil de June Wilson, aunque a su vez es la forma inconsciente que Syd tenía de referirse a si mismo como el espantapájaros. La parte final, con la guitarra acústica y el órgano, son una delicia. El cierre del disco, “Bike”, lo constituye una primera mitad de estructura pop convencional que desemboca en una arriesgada segunda parte repleta de bizarras sonoridades cuya estructura precede a los experimentos de Ummagumma e incluso a “Revolution No. 9” que los Beatles grabaron un año después. Tras la edición del disco, Pink Floyd comenzó la primera gira por Estados Unidos en la que se evidenciaron los desequilibrios de Syd, sobre todo en los show de TV. Parte de la gira fue cancelada. En noviembre de 1967 compartieron un tour con Jimi Hendrix en el que realizaron 30 conciertos en 21 dias y quedó aún más claro que Barrett no podría seguir esa dinámica. Su salud era precaria y a su dependencia de las drogas fuertes se unían unos genes de esquizofrenia. Él mismo se encargó de acudir a su amigo David Gilmour para que lo ayudara. Durante todo el mes de enero de 1968 Pink Floyd fue un quinteto, pero el rol de Syd cada vez era menos importante. A duras penas, ayudado en especial por Gilmour, pudo editar dos albumes y dejar material para otro. Ajeno a su invalorable legado, durante casi 40 años se mantuvo en un extraño limbo, hasta morir en julio de 2006. En febrero de aquel año 68 ya David Gilmour se había convertido en el nuevo guitarrista de Pink Floyd y así, con el escepticismo de todos los fans, comenzaba un nuevo período para la banda. Pero eso es otra historia. La influencia de Syd y The Piper A través de las décadas, la primera etapa de Pink Floyd con Barrett ha servido de inspiración para decenas de bandas. El krautrock alemán de principios de los años 70 (Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, Agitation Free, Guru Guru, Amon Düül II, etc) se dejó seducir. Grupos pop como XTC y su alter ego The Dukes Of Stratosfear, Blur, Super Furry Animals, The Coral, Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, The Kitchens Cynics y artistas como Julian Cope, Robyn Hitchcock, Martin Newell, Kevin Ayers y David Bowie nunca han ocultado esa influencia.

Programa dedicado al lado cósmico del krautrock (años 70). Los años formativos de la música electrónica moderna, con grupos fundamentales que sentaron las bases de la electrónica de las décadas siguientes. Durante los años 70 las herramientas eran totalmente analógicas, por lo que el mérito fue soberbio. Sintetizadores como el Mini Moog, el VCS3, Oberheim, así como el sistema modular Moog, el mellotron, los primeros secuenciadores y unas cajas rítmicas sencillas, fueron la columna vertebral para propuestas que aun hoy dia son paradigmas.
